Lupe talked to THE AGE in Australia, mainly discussing the conflicts he is/was going through with his label. Check it out below.
Historically, there has been a conflict between the music Lupe wants to create and the music his label wants him to make.
Lupe: ''It's less about me being a celebrity, because I guess I'm not really a celebrity,'' he says. ''The most difficult part of the music business is the label."
"What I want to do and what they want me to do - creatively - is in conflict. It doesn't keep me up at night. I look at it as a challenge. It's not meant to be easy." - Hit the jump to read more!
"There's a misunderstanding with my fanbase,'' he says. ''People [at Warner] feel they know my fans more than I do.
They want me to step out of my comfort zone and step into theirs. I don't have necessarily the celebrity success they want me to have but it's more social success and being able to speak at a college about world affairs. That's a success, to me.
I don't want to be Jay-Z and be worth $400 million and perform on every awards show. It's getting in touch with somebody who needs to improve their self-esteem, as opposed to driving a Bentley and putting some chains on.''
Lupe's third album for Warner, Lasers, was submitted last month. The label has yet to announce a release date. ''It's an album we both feel comfortable putting out,'' Lupe says. ''I'm somebody saying the things that maybe 98 per cent of the music industry is not.''

Atlantic trying to make him change, smh.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how many albums he gotta release before that contract up...............
ReplyDeleteman i really feel they're going to chamillionaire him or 50 cent him, i really hope atlantic doesn't snake him and just waits until forever to give im a release date
ReplyDeletedamn its sad that these labels try to force artist outta their creative zone jus so they can do some mainstream bullshit thats why true hip hop is dying cuz these gay ass label heads is forcing bullshit on ppl
ReplyDeleteI think it sucks how Atlantic wont let Lupe put his album out yet. Seems as if they are just being stubborn because he doesn't want to do what they want him to do.
ReplyDeleteagree,bad bad and very sad
ReplyDeleteIf anyone from Atlantic is reading this, go fuck yourselves. Holding back a real aertist just because he isn't comforming to the mainstream bullshit. Assholes.
ReplyDeleteHe wasnt never gonna sell that many records no matter what type of music it was anyway.. "lasers" gtfoh all the super-nerdy white boys coppin that ONLY.
ReplyDeleteLMAO at the ignorant poster above.
ReplyDeleteLabel is scared of Lupe cause his music is to deep.....He doesnt care bout what rank he get when the album sales.. he just wants to put out real music.... Plus im tired of hearing 50cent,lil wayne,Gucci, and that wack ass fool Flacka Flame... none of them are real music... Just record label puppets that they control.. i feel wurr Lupe coming frm.
ReplyDeleteif u want an idea about this dude fanbase.. goto HMV on the day his record drops and count the number of tight pants. this guy trynna be real and rock star at the same time.. SMH go kick and push some more.
ReplyDeletePLUS what they hell did he THINK the record labels are all about? theyre about selling records. if he thinks his artistry ever came before commercial viability of a product his pants have been tight for too long and he's lost his senses.
ReplyDeleteGo listen to Soulja Boy dumbass. If you really think his fanbase is just " nerds", then something is wrong with you.
ReplyDeleteListening to rap with a meaning makes you a nerd? Guess I'll take it.
why in the fuck would you come all the way over here to lupe's site to hate, boy do you not have a life or anything better to do than hate, you get the fuck out of here with your ignorant hating ass
ReplyDeletelook at you ladies cry!! lmao
ReplyDeleteLasers is never coming out.
ReplyDeleteAtlantic is sabotaging his career. Fuck them.
lolll of course he stays anonymous..
ReplyDeleteif you say something atleast back it up, they aren't crying about anything, your just bringing up stupid claims that you cant back up thats all
Fuck the haters....Lupe ur the shit and don't compromise ne thing. U'r Lupe Fiasco because Wasulu is a fucking G and ur creativity is unlike anyone elses. Keep doin ur thing...ur true fans will admire u no matter what
ReplyDeletei have faith that lupe will stay true to himself and not conform to what atlantic wants out of him, for me at least if lupe folds hip hop might as well fold along with him. nothing in life comes easy so i dnt mind waiting a few months for an album that ill listen to for years.itll be interesting to see if lupe can lyrically top his own tracks.
ReplyDeleteLupe said himself that "It's an album we both feel comfortable putting out.'' How is that not conforming? He's suggesting that he has reduced and toned what he ACTUALLY wants to release in order to please those who are there to monitor him.
ReplyDeleteConsidering Lupe has always been an artist who supposedly "against the establishment," he sure has difficulty standing up to it. I would argue he's conformed more to the old ways of the music industry than most artists today (epecially Hip Hop).
Lupe doesn't have the business savvy or gall to be as successful as Jay-Z because he is reduced by a higher up. Jay-Z has created his own path in most everything he's done. Honestly, it is not a matter of wanting to be a celebrity or not.
Lupe is just as stuck in the old ways of the music business as the label is. He fights harder than any artist today about "leaked music" and free art, etc. Mark my words...the future of music is free (or some way of donation-based), self-distributed, music. Think about all the mixtapes you have in your itunes...YOU didn't pay for them.
And to those suggesting he doesn't care where his album ends up on the charts, or how well it sells? If he didn't care he wouldn't have signed a major contract in the first place. "A person who engages in a pursuit on an unpaid basis" is the definition of an AMATEUR. If he wasn't getting paid for this he would be an amateur. We can all agree he's no amateur, and does not desire to be one. He wants to get PAID just like anyone else who has a job (whether they love their job or not...which Lupe generally seems to not).
peace.
will shut the fuck up
ReplyDeleteamatuer means that a person just started and dont know what they are doing not "If he wasn't getting paid for this he would be an amateur"
not getting paid dont equal a amatuer
yall really dont know about the music industry do yall??
ReplyDeletelupe's got 12 year old, zit faced, crackling voiced, puberty midst, tight pantsed, unknowledgable, likely broke & futureless, depressed VIRGIN, crying ass fans!!!
ReplyDeleteLMAO!!!!!!!!!
^you are a idiot, you must be describing your self there jackass
ReplyDeleteyou are very ignorant and you are a hater/loser with no life thathy you come here to hate
fuck off
Don't feed the trolls.
ReplyDeleteits funny that Lupe USED to say he wasn't famous enough. It's funny how he gave a speech at the haloween show in Chicago about why he wants to be a big star... I call bullshit.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.facebook.com/pages/Michael-Young-History/325174717269
ReplyDeleteJay-Z gives a Fuck about Lupe Floppp. Shut the fuckkk up.
ReplyDeleteJay doesnt perform at every award show.
And what fans? I dont know anyone who likes Lupe. Fakee bishh. And jay called this dude the next big thing. i cant
lmao at Hova stans coming out to defend the god himself. Lame ass niggas.
ReplyDeletethey obviously aint jigga stans. jay has given props to lupe forever you fucks.
ReplyDeletelet me teach y'all younguns a slice of reality...
ReplyDeleteyou can't feel like you are entitled to SHIT while signing to a major record label until you've established a LEGACY. While lupe's previous work may qualify as GOOD, it's nowhere near forming a LEGACY therefore him demanding anything beyond a compromise between making some good music and at the same time conforming to expand his fanbase beyond the ones he claims to know, is propostrous.
you fans chanting "oh he'll never do what the label wants" need to wake up.. just a lil bit
"If you ain't million dollar dreaming then we opposites"
ReplyDeleteexact words from The One off Enemy of The State,,, Lupe want the money too so he should stop fronting
his music on point & talk some real shit so he need to stop lying to the media
@ Anonymous
ReplyDeletemillion dollar dreaming, not 400 million dollar dreaming, lol
man Lupe needs to screw over his label and just leak Lasers..if he ain't concerned about makin bread, then he should sabatoge Atlantic and just release the album online man. F88k these labels, bunch of devils anyway.
