Video: Matthew Santos @ Lincoln Hall [Backstage Interview]

This interview is a couple of months old already but was just uploaded to Vimeo a few days ago.

Stephanie Katsaros interviewed Matthew Santos backstage at the Lincoln Hall in Chicago on Dec. 4th, 2009 (Matthew's Album Preview Party/Performance.)

Matthew talked about his songwriting process, who he'd like to do a collabo with, what he learned while recording his upcoming album and he also shared some of the things he experienced while being on tour w/ Lupe & Kanye.

A Genius Lu' Volume 38

"Ahead of my time, failed history, passed chemistry,
quiet nines and Quinine
My energy, always be weaponry to unload,
while there's people to hold up,
reputations to uphold
I'm Gung Ho with them white lines,
not the kind that divide traffic
but the kind that remind addicts, automatics to yo attic
Teched-out Porsches 'n' the decked out Boxster"

This week's Genius Lu comes courtesy of @MusNYK20 of The Evident Truth and it's from Lupe's "Ooh." Below he explains why he chose it:

"'Ooh' is one of my all time favorite Lupe tracks. I've always said it's the most underrated Lu track which is the reason why I chose it.

An insane flow with hard hitting lyrics just waiting to be deciphered. "Quinine" referring to a chemical alkaloid, hence the "passed chemistry" line..

"Gung Ho" means "work together" however Lu correlates it to a "Gun" in which he will kick knowledge to your head hence the "automatic to yo attic" line. (Sean's side note: Gung-Ho is also a character from the "G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero" toyline by Hasbro) Man, that whole song is ridiculous."

Unforgettable: Lupe Fiasco's The Cool published this recap of Lupe's classic '07 release a few days ago. A very good read, check it out below!

Whatever it was that N.E.R.D was in search of: Lupe Fiasco found with his 2007 release The Cool. What is Cool? Cool is a living contradiction.

Lupe doesn't avoid the nature of Cool - he clutches to it like an insomniac to the other side of the pillow. This album lives The Cool through and through.

What is "Team Lasers"? - Team Lasers is a Fan Based Promotional Team For Generation Lasers, to support and promote Lupe and his upcoming album.

"Team Lasers" was the idea of @_LadyLASERS and myself...she came up with the main concept and then we discussed names and all that stuff but she's in charge of it, I just did some things like the logo design etc.

So far there's a Twitter Account and a FaceBook Page... <--- click on the links to check the sites, join and follow!

This is just the beginning, later on there'll be a full on website and much stay tuned and spread the word!

Melyssa Ford says that she loves Lupe Fiasco

Someone recently went to Twitter and asked Melyssa what she thinks about rappers who use her name in their songs (like Lupe did in I'm Beamin').

This is what she said: "Lupe and Kanye put my name in their songs and spoke favorably... Game... I have no beef with him over his song..." in a follow-up tweet she also said that she loves Lupe. - Source: Melyssa Ford's Twitter

Also interesting:

This is pure speculation but seeing that they've worked together quite a lot lately, there might be another collabo in the works. Kenna is currently working on his upcoming album "Songs For Flight."

Video: Lupe Fiasco - "Daydreamin'" - Live @ Stubb's BBQ

Here we have some previously unreleased footage of Lupe's performance @ Stubb's BBQ in Austin, TX from February 2007 (he opened for The Roots).

Daniel sent it in and also included a little story about the show:

Daniel: "Here's a funny little story about this show which actually involved this girl that was waiting in line in front of me before the show...

My homeboy and I showed up an hour early before the doors opened in order to get a good spot up front. There were maybe about 20-30 die hard Lu fans that really wanted to see him and were thinking the same thing we were.

So there was a group of 4 girls in front of us and so while waiting in line we talked a bit about our favorite Lu songs and such off of Food & Liquor.

So this girl says, "'Sunshine' is my favorite, I just want him to sing 'Sunshine' to me." She was all dreamy about it when she said it and we all just kind of talked about our favorites after that.

Sure enough when Lu started to perform "Sunshine" during the show, he sang the whole 2nd verse, chorus and 3rd verse of "Sunshine" right to her holding her hand and everything. I couldn't fucking believe it!"

Fan Review: Lupe Fiasco - Live in Stockton, CA

Ben W. attended Lupe's concert in Stockton, CA on March 20th, 2010 and sent us his review of the show, check it out below!

On Saturday night in Stockton, Lupe Fiasco delivered a masterful performance that was second to none. Fiasco came out with a energy filled performance of Shining Down, with his denim jacket, aviator frames, and leather gloves.

The whole night the crowd was under his control, at their feet the whole time. The energy was off the charts. Lupe was running around, jumping throughout his whole two hour performance and his 30 minute encore...

"Stay Resistant And Committed To What You're Saying Cause
They Could Flip It The Minute That You Refrain
Read The Book And The Lines And Literature In Between
You Gotta Be Educated When Going Against The Grain
Pay Attention, They Illegitimate In They Claims
They Assisted In The Killing And Pillaging
In Addition To The Addiction
Shit Is Much Bigger Than Just Complains But..."

This week's Genius Lu' comes courtesy of @wTeeeF. As you can see above, he chose a part of the 3rd verse of "Glory" and also explained why:

"The entire song really goes hard for me personally but the last verse and the last few bars, particularly, stand out the most. Partially because it's an obvious nod to Malcolm X but also because I believe that knowledge is the ultimate super power. (as proven in the movie Watchmen.)

Give 'em the game, that's like giving chocolate to the fat
Look, how you think I got here?
That's the same game that came through where I lived as a kid
in the bad luck truck and threw boxes off the back
Made me a ripper, deliver like Riva =]
content a little more thicker, slicker
Yeah, and they said oil and water don't mix
Now they all down at the beach washing off the fish
it was Blackbeard 'til I brought the Roc into your ships

Lupe Fiasco reaches out to Jay Electronica & explains Jay-Z Comment

While on the red carpet for the premiere of the MTV documentary "Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro," Lupe spoke to MTV and said that he's not only down with collaborating with Jay Electronica, he's initiating things.

"I reached out to him a couple of days ago with some real serious ideas," Lupe said. " 'Let's put a program together. Something that works out and makes sense for the both of us.'

He's a very talented MC. One of the few MCs that I actually listen to what they're saying. I don't listen to 98 percent of the rappers out there. But he's one of the MCs I listen to and I'm inspired to do so. A collaboration is in the works."

Lupe also clarified the comments he made recently, when he said he did not want to be like the video above to find out what he said.

Lupe Fiasco used 'Karate Magic' to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro

In the video above you can see how Lupe describes his Mt. Kilimanajro experience at the New York premiere of the documentary "Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro."

Lupe: "I guess it was one of them 'Karate Kid' moments, you know? I did martial arts for, like, 20 years. My father was a Grand Master for, like, 40 years before he passed. It's just one of those lessons that we were taught."

"We used to run in the snow barefoot, jump over cars, hang out of trees and do all types of crazy stuff, and that was just part of the training, to understand that it's you versus yourself."

"The terrain is always going to exist, it's always going to be there, and it's whether you are capable enough to go through it. Just some little mysticism right there, a little bit of that karate magic to keep the mind going."

SOTS:K Climbers to meet with Blumenauer on Capitol Hill

Fresh from a climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise awareness for clean drinking water, Lupe Fiasco, Kenna, Santigold and other climbers are expected to join Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) at a screening of the “Summit on the Summit” documentary on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. today.

Blumenauer is an avid hiker, so he'll have plenty to talk about with the group of celebs that hiked the mountain in Tanzania as part of Summit on the Summit in January of this year.

In what will no doubt disappoint a few male staffers, actress Jessica Biel is unable to make it, despite having participated in the climb.
