Lupe got on the phone with Complex and talked with them about 'The Show Goes On,' 'Words I Never Said' and his Love/Hate relationship with Lasers.
“I don’t like the process behind Lasers. The music is dope but I just don’t like the process. We were literally at the point where all this music was done except for a couple songs that we did after the protest. So the bulk of the album was done. And we were talking about shelving the album and going to another label, that’s where we were like, ‘If you put the record out, put it out. Either move on to another album or can it and we’ll do other records at another label.’ The business of it got solved. I’m happy for the fans, this is their album. This is the album that they fought for and that’s what made me do songs like ‘Words I Never Said’ and ‘All Black Everything.’"

Check an excerpt:
On a recent afternoon in Brooklyn, Fiasco, 29, explains why his new album, Lasers, took so long. "I wanted to make a popular record," he says, looking every bit the inscrutable intellectual in black shades, black porkpie hat, and black leather jacket, "but by my definition of popular."That meant inciting "an uprising of the people," he says, with apparent sincerity—not surprising, perhaps, coming from a guy whose Black Panther father taught him how to fire assault rifles as a kid.

Lasers stand for progression. Lasers are revolutionary.

TWU: What do you think about the general direction hip-hop has moved into in the last 5 years? Do you think it had evolved?
Lupe Fiasco: I don’t know, because hip-hop has always been something experimental. It’s always been progressive, so it may just be another cycle coming around, or maybe the beats are better, but are they actually creating new music? In some instances no, they’re doing the same stuff and people are jumping on the same bandwagon as opposed to some people making new things. The only person who really impressed me with making new music is Cudi. Everyone else seems to be jumping on the same music, the producer-made stuff, but the one person that’s made new music to me is Cudi.
