Lupe stopped by the Jet offices recently while in Chicago to talk with senior writer Melody K. Hoffman about his latest album, Lasers.
Lupe talked about being controversial, walking the line between celebrity and non-celebrity and the meaning of "deep." - JET
Who Are You Now from Phase 2 of LASERS. Was an early track for LASERS that got put on the backburner unfinished. I wanted Cee-Lo or Janelle on the 3rd!Prod by Lupe Fiasco, B.o.B on Guitar & Matt Nelson on the boards. Oh and Graham Burris on BASS!!! Japanese Cartoon On The Check In.For those who say I don't put out free music or question my love for my fans...take this as a peace offering or a STFU whatever fits you haha!
Hilltop: What makes this album different from your last musically and lyrically?
Fiasco: This one is a little bit more pop, a little more commercial oriented. I'm focused on more radio records, but that was just musically. Lyrically and content wise it's the same as all of my other records, social conscious, social awareness, and self-determination and things of that nature.
Hilltop: Do you know what the next single will be?
Fiasco: The next single is actually a double hit. We're going to put the video out for ‘Words I Never Said' in a couple of weeks and the next single they are pushing is ‘Out of My Head' featuring Trey Songz.
To be clear to everyone that attended the House Of Blues Laser release thing in Chicago. It was NEVER supposed to be a show... The promoters didn't stress to the public the fact that it was supposed to just be a party.I had NO hand in organizing the event. Nor did my team. I don't even know who the other performers were until the night before the event. As far as me being late I literally drove about 6 hours to get there and I ran out of gas around Springfield!!!! Shout to AAA 4 the save!!! But anyways my name was on it so I'll take the "L" and rest assured that it will NEVER EVER happen again.
I love my fans. I'm sorry u guys had to go thru some BS. Again me and my crew had NOTHING to do w/ how the event was ran or organized. Also all the money for the event from my side is and always was going to be donated to charity so atleast for me it was a free event.

Lupe released the gold-selling Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool in 2007. After a highly publicized dispute with Atlantic Records, which had his fans signing a petition to demand the release of his highly anticipated, Lasers, the CD finally hit stores in early March.
The LP debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200 and sold 204, 200 its first week— making it the highest selling debut of his career.
Lupe Fiasco’s third album, Lasers, cements his reputation as one of hip-hop’s most cerebral and distinctive performers. “Before I did any of the recording, I wrote a very socially conscious, socially active manifesto, and I used it as the template for the album,” says the 29-year-old, who lives in East Garfield Park. This is my second tattoo. I got it February 24, two days after my 21st birthday. Ever since my first tattoo in 09, I've always wanted lyrics to a song.
Lupe is one of my favorites, so I figured why not. Besides I believe this line from Hurt Me Soul is beyond powerful!
A design in honor of Lupe Fiasco, his fans and the Fiasco Friday movement. Design was inspired by Lupe's Lasers album cover artwork. Fiasco Friday will never stop! We must remind people that it's an ongoing movement in hip-hop.

I know you probably been asked this a million times but do you think Hip-Hop is still dead?Yeah, yeah it is. Yeah, but the new artists that I’m loving they coming from the UK, they coming United States, they coming from all over the world and a few in particular are J. Cole, Jay Electronica. I’m really into them and I’m excited for Lupe Fiasco’s new album ‘Lasers’ and Raekwon’s new album so the spirit of Hip-Hop is alive and well. The spirit is, can’t kill the spirit.
While sitting in the 27th-floor lounge of his corporate parent during the month before Lasers' release, Fiasco told The Daily Beast that he initially felt he was "creating new music" with his first draft. Then came the pressure from his label to take a pop turn.
"That's what the record label made me do," Fiasco said. "I asked 'What album do you want at this point? You're shitting on my creative [process] and what have you.' ... And they said, 'We want Top 40. We want No. 1 smashes.' ...So the focus for everybody, from A&R [people] down to the writers that I write with, went to: 'Let's get these smashes, write these big-ass hooks and get these big humongous beats.'"..."They don't have a choice on the next one," Fiasco told The Daily Beast later that night, back up on the 27th floor of his record company's office."The way I'm putting it out now is: What some of you guys sent me through, you'll never have a say-so on a project of mine ever again. That conversation between us is done. You're not even allowed to tell me what to do at all."
If you're not familiar with Emilio Rojas, well then you can redeem some cool points by grabbing his last mixtape, Life Without Shame, but if you are, then you know he doesn't ever disappoint!
