#7 - Lupe Fiasco

Lupe Fiasco is an extremely popular artist despite having some of the most deeply multi-layered lyrics the genre has ever seen.

Normally I would see this as a positive thing for the industry, however his last album was a terrible, pandering piece of work thanks to people working at the label (I’m not a guy who rails against mainstream evil hampering artistic integrity or even like other people who spew such things, but in this case I was very angered).

That last tidbit aside, however, his previous work was glorious. He always had a socially responsible message in his agenda, but his rhymes were more than that. He would paint beautiful, detailed pictures, often times listening to him provided an experience akin to lucid dreaming, the way he delivered his fantastical lines in his trademark laid back manner.

Yet, his lyrics were not just free-associative “mush,” he always rapped with substance, often times just one couplet would offer three different meaning simultaneously, and yet his command of language never allowed the listener to be overwhelmed or frustrated. Even if you did not always know what he meant you always felt it. And damn… the man had a way with words.

Lupe Fiasco is #1 on LA Weekly's "Top Five Drastic Rapper Image Changes" List

Someone over at LA Weekly put together a list of the Top Five Drastic Rapper Image Changes (yeah, they must be bored over there) and Lupe's on #1.

Now there's nothing wrong with that but why's Lupe the only one that the writer wrote about in a negative tone throughout the whole article while he wrote mostly neutral about all the other acts? Unprofessional. - Check what Phillip Mlynar had to say about Lupe below:

"You know I don't pop-pop at the bar/But I might send pop-pops through your car." Those are the firebrand boasts of Lupe Fiasco, who before finding a career as an antidote to rap's gangsta leanings attempted to blow-up by, er, positioning himself as a full-on, club-hopping gangsta type.

Elsewhere in the song "Pop Pop," Lupe vows to "put the tool in your face," brags about how he's got the police, hustlers and gangstas "nervous," and details how he does all of the above while wearing alligator skin loafers. (He's a size ten, if you're feeling generous.)

But when lil' Lupe realized that crime rhymes weren't going to pay for him, he wholesale flipped his image into some sort of conscious skateboarding rapper nerd who collects rare Japanese-edition Sylvanian Families figures.

Nattily, the last couple of years have seen Lupe yet again develop a new persona for himself, as he seems to have ditched the idea of even attempting to make enjoyable music in preference for becoming a professional whinger and whiner.

Chart Update: Lupe Fiasco's 'Out Of My Head' keeps Climbing!

After being #57 on the Billboard Hot 100 last week, 'Out Of My Head' climbs further up to position #42 this week! 'The Show Goes On' on the other hand falls from #13 to #16.

Lasers is now #113 on the Billboard 200 and is looking at 440k total sales in the US.

MTV's "120 Minutes" Returns [Debut episode features Lupe Fiasco]

Yahoo reports that the popular MTV alternative music show 120 Minutes will return to MTV2 on Sunday, July 30th and the debut episode will feature interviews with musicians Dave Grohl, PJ Harvey, Danger Mouse, Kings of Leon, Das Racist, Sleigh Bells, Lupe Fiasco, Black Angels, Theophilus London and Fitz and the Tantrums.

The debut episode will air July 30th on MTV2 at 1am EST.

Chart update: No big changes this Week

No big changes on the charts this week when it comes to Lupe. 'Out Of My Head' climbed up 1 spot to #69 and 'The Show Goes On' fell to #13 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Lasers dropped to position #109 on the Billboard 200 this week and is the #14 Rap Album in the country.

Lupe Fiasco Set Times - Openair Frauenfeld / Splash!

Previously the set times for the 2 European Festivals Lupe will perform at this upcoming weekend weren't available, but now they are here!

Lupe will hit the stage at the Openair Frauenfeld in Switzerland on Saturday [July 9th] at 7:50pm and he'll perform on the Vulcano Main Stage of the Splash! Festival in Germany on Sunday [July 10th] at 8:45pm. - If you're going, enjoy!
