Concert Review: Lupe Fiasco @ Chaifetz Arena

After pics and some video footage here's a review of Lupe's show in St. Louis which went down yesterday:

The world is going mad as Lupe Fiasco leaps onto the stage, flying in from somewhere behind the black curtain to take his pulpit behind the microphone stand.

"I really think the war on terror is a bunch of bull shit..."

He is rapping "Words I Never Said," rolling his shoulders to the rhythm of the full band behind him, his short dreads bursting skyward like fireworks.

"Your child's future was the first to go with budget cuts/ If you think that hurts then, wait, here comes the uppercut, the school was garbage in the first place..."

At the tail of each bar he gazes into the mass of swaying arms and bouncing bodies, packing the floor of the Chaifetz Arena at Saint Louis University. It's homecoming weekend here and Lupe is preaching to an anguished generation crippled with college debt, staring into the mouth of the worst economy in 80 years, adolescent idealism prematurely eroding into disillusionment.

We're a generation at a crossroads between empowerment and cynicism. Lupe gives us voice.

Food & Liquor Week: "Daydreamin'" Video

I forgot to post a Food & Liquor week entry yesterday. That's actually good cause due to the fact that I couldn't get clearance to post the video I originally wanted to put up today we'll just go with Daydreamin' for the last day of Food & Liquor week.

Daydreamin' was the 3rd single released in the States and Lupe won a Grammy for it in 2008. In the clip Lupe plays the owner of a fictional Righteous Kung Fu Toy/Vinyl store in which a robot becomes alive, Toy Story style. ....I said ROBOT!

Food & Liquor Week: "The Emperor's Soundtrack" [Video]

We continue Food & Liquor week, looking back at another video. This time it's the one for "The Emperor's Soundtrack" which was also directed by the good folks of Impakt Studios.

Now there are some rumors that this was supposed to be a longer clip but I don't know about that. The way it looks to me it was only supposed to be as long as it is, but who knows.

The video itself was shot at the Iron Studios in Chicago, IL. I really like the little effects that they put on it and as I said before, I like the charm of those videos that are not so high budget/glossy looking.

Azad Right - The Time Is Right [Mixtape]

Azad Right is not only featured on our Dreaming Awake mixtape, he has also just hooked up with DJBooth.net to bring us his latest street album, The Time Is Right.

The project features 15 original records (and two bonus cuts) from the underground up-and-comer. Check the track 'Caught In A Dream' below.

Food & Liquor Week: "Kick, Push" Video

Today we're looking back at the video for Lupe's first single "Kick, Push" which was also directed by Chris & Blaq of Impakt Studios. Besides the video for Ye's "Touch the Sky" this was the first video most fans saw of Lupe.

What I like about this clip is the whole urban/street atmosphere. That's always been something I really liked in Hip Hop videos. Lupe also got that vibe in the "Failure" video but more recently his clips are more polished and I'm kinda missing that aspect and hope that he might goes back to that for a clip in the future.

Looking back at it, you might notice that some familiar faces from Lu's crew are in the clip. I want to especially point out Ant because a lot of people been asking "Where did he come from?" when he started to join Lupe on stage. He was already there back then.

Video: Lupe Fiasco - 2012 BMW 650i Promo

Lupe is starring in the new International Promo video for the 2012 BMW 650i. The clip also features Lupe's "Out Of My Head" and was directed by Michael Thelin. Lupe breaks down some of the special features of the car in the video.

Video: Lupe Fiasco performs @ The Tabernacle [Atlanta]

Lupe performed at The Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA yesterday and we have around 20 minutes of footage from the show right here. The video above really starts at the 2:14 mark with "Words I Never Said" followed by "State Run Radio" and more!

Food & Liquor Week: Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor - A Retrospective

What did you do today, 5 years ago? Some of you probably went to a CD store and grabbed a copy of Lupe's debut album. I personally can't say that I bought the album on that day, I'm not even sure if it dropped on the same day over here in Germany.

What I can say though is that I immediately bought it when I saw it in a store. After grabbing my copy I went through the same routine that I go through with every album that I buy, I put it in my CD player, pressed play and read the booklet.

While checking the booklet of Food & Liquor one of the first things I noticed were the pics of kids in school with guns and I found that whole imagery very fascinating. It kinda took away from the first listening cause I really looked at those photos and tried to catch all the details.

Same goes for the album cover, which in my opinion is one of the dopest covers ever. I mean what other artist could have all these things on his cover and actually get it all cleared from every company...alone that is a crazy little detail about the album.

Video: Lupe Fiasco Interview w/ Raheem DeVaughn

Raheem DeVaughn caught up with Lupe backstage at the Merriweather Post Pavilion show this past Friday. Review: Lupe Fiasco @ Merriweather Post Pavilion

Check out a review of Lupe's show at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD that went down this past Friday:

With a huge red lit capital letter "A" dominating center stage and his band (complete with violinist and 3 beautiful female background singers) surrounding him on stage, Lupe took us on a journey.

As a hip hop performer, Lupe interacts with and feeds off of his band's instrumental interpretations very well. From the radio popular hits like 'Out of my Head' and 'The Show Goes On' to throwbacks like 'Kick, Push', 'The Cool' and 'Hip-Hop Saved My Life' Lupe performed an effortlessly tireless 55 min set. Bouncing from one end of the stage to the other, Lupe commanded the crowd in a display of how long he really has been doing this.

Wale may have warmed the crowd up, but Lupe Fiasco wielded the mic skillfully and kept them hot. Stopping to talk to his audience every once in a while between songs, Lupe constantly reminded his fans to keep moving forward toward your dreams never forgetting where you come from.

Ice-T gives props to Lupe Fiasco

VIBE interviewed Ice-T at a movie screening on Tuesday and when asked about what's missing from Hip Hop, he said the following:

I want to see some little motherfuckers get together like a Public Enemy and give these fools a wake up call like, “Fuck this jewelry and cars bullshit,” and bring it back to Armageddon! Don’t get it twisted the people that are making music now, I’m not mad at them.

People think I’m mad at pop music [but] I’m not. I’m just saying the conscious music is lacking. There’s no roots, really, and when you think about the groups that I name like the PE’s and all that, they can’t make records now because we’re not the right age. We’re the age of their parents. Kids don’t want to listen to their parents, so we accept that so I’m saying there just needs to be someone. KRS 1 and all of us used to be so militant at our age.

Where are those kids that are gonna come out and really push the envelope? NWA did “Fuck the Police,” we were going hard, we were getting arrested. Now everybody is trying to stay in their nice little safe bubble and I miss the edgy music. That’s all I’m saying.

Saying you sell drugs, that’s not edgy to me, let’s talk about some issues. Lupe Fiasco does it. I’ve listened to some of his stuff. He’s not afraid but there’s a lack. I would love to be a fan of some new little bad ass cats coming out and letting mother fuckers know what’s up.

Lupe Fiasco: To The Sep17 Occupiers - "Moneyman"

Occupy Wall Street is going down on Sept. 17th in New York. People will set up tents and occupy Wall Street for months. Lupe just posted something on his site for the Occupiers:

Hey Moneyman the crowd is outside. The past, the future and the now is outside. The teachers and cooks and the drop-outs too. Word on the street is they looking for you…

Hey Moneyman they saying whats the score? And how much blood have you spilled on the butcher shop floor? Those number keeping running but what they running into? The crowd is outside and they asking of you…

Hey Moneyman Moneyman the mayors' on the phone. He says he wants to know if all those people went home. Those momma's and poppa's and students and cooks. Those teachers and preachers, one second I'll look…

Hey Moneyman Moneyman the tents are still up, the songs are still singing and the coffee's in cups. The nights due to fall and the sun's going down but its still a whole mess of good folks hanging round...

They eyes are wide and their voices are loud. Its white and black and colorless proud. The signs are big and the smiles are bright. By heaven I reckon its gone be one hell of a night!

Hey Moneyman poor Moneyman you should slip out the back. Cuz the forces of greed are under attack. No bombs or bullets or rocks or guns. Just hashtag's and voices at the tops of their lungs!

And Moneyman Moneyman I wont need a ride. But if you need me…

You can find me outside.

Review: Lupe Fiasco @ HOB Boston [09/12/11]

Haven't had a show review on here in a while so here it goes via BMS:

Like his lifestyle, Fiasco’s music and performance are defined by eclecticism as well. Not only does he tour with a live band rather than a DJ like most rappers do, but he’s probably the only MC you’ll see with a violinist in his band (Berklee grad Ashanti Floyd).

His show started out more like a rock show than hip hop with the band blasting through the powerful “Words I Never Said” as Fiasco banged his head and played air guitar while singer Sarah Green took the vocals on Skylar Grey’s catchy chorus.

With a post-punk side project called Japanese Cartoon, Fiasco is no stranger to rock and he used this side of him to fuel the excitement for the first leg of the show with amped up tracks like “State Run Radio”, “Go Go Gadget Flow” and his verse from N.E.R.D.’s “Everyone Nose”...

Mixtape: Charles Hamilton - Sober Karaoke

Now some of you MAY already have this mixtape due to it leaking roughly 2 months ago, but since it never received an "official release", I figured we throw this up to those who may not have it yet. Leilani Dowding likes Lupe's Lyrical Content

Leilani Dowding is a glamour model/pin-up from the UK who'll be part of the upcoming VH1 reality series "Tough Love Miami." In an interview with TaleTela she revealed that she likes herself some Lupe every now and then.

On the musical side of things, what sort of music do you listen to?

I pretty much listen to everything except heavy metal or rave music. I like pop, RnB, hip-hop, and rock.

We noticed that while you don’t follow too many people on Twitter you do follow Lupe Fiasco. Is it his music, his message, or both that does it for you?

I like Lupe’s lyrical content. His messages are good. He encourages people to think outside of the box, and question what we are told and expected to just believe.
