The Source has put together a list of the Top 50 Hip Hop Lyricists of All Time. Lupe is listed on position 49. I pretty much voiced my opinion about this on Twitter, so I'll just let you read what The Source wrote about Lupe and if you want to see the full list; go HERE for all scans.
In an age when denouncing violence and encouraging positive development in Rap seems to be a career killer, Lupe has defied the odds and emerged onto the scene with a more upbeat and positive meaning in his lyrics.
To some Lupe's lyrical repertoire may seem like a contradiction to his true message but he manages to draw in a wider audience with it and open up the eyes of the Hip Hop community. Using his emotion as a tool, Lupe is not afraid to voice his opinion.

That's disrespectful.
ReplyDeletethis is one of the weakest reviews I've had the unpleasure of reading in a long time. Lupe has had his moments of stark pessimism about the world but nonetheless manages to come out on top with witty lyrics that transcend the everyday humdrum superficial crap that boils out of today's mainstream (and even some underground) artists. Lupe should have been higher on this list - if anything, higher than Little Kim and Ludacris whose once "quality" raps have diminished to nothing but mainstream fodder in the past 2 years - and if this is the type of bull they're printing on TheSource then they've just lost another reader.
ReplyDeleteThis is the most ignorant list I've ever read...lupe is the goat hands down....no one comes close lyrically.....this man is the meda4 king...ignorance is so bliss
ReplyDeleteLuda and rick ross over lu? Fuck that
ReplyDeleteRick Ross?!!! Dear Lord. 2012 really is the end...
ReplyDeleteThe fact that this list is about lyricists, lupe should be much higher I mean rick Ross seriously
ReplyDeleteThis just makes the Source look ignorant. Rick Ross should not be on any list of lyricists. Nor should T.I., Fabolous, or DMX. If the 40's are that terrible, I can't imagine how bad the rest of that list is.
ReplyDeleteThe source = we're not credible, don't take us seriously.
ReplyDeleteThe source has been a weak magazine for so long that what they have to say means nada to me. Lol this shit proves how wack that mag is. And I'm most def not being bias on this one. Lol
ReplyDeleteThe Source still comes out? I thought after Dave Mays and Benzino folded the mag was done. I thought it was just online thing now, welp news to me.
ReplyDeleteOn behalf of Lupe, I'm offended.
ReplyDeleteWow this is an insult what a stupid article. Everyoe knows lupe should at leats be in the top 20 if not top 10 above
ReplyDeleteunder li wayne lil kim and rick ross?
I think not
The SOurce used to be the shit back in the day but it's been dead and irrelevant for yrs now who cares.
ReplyDeleteRAKIM 1 NAS 2 is REAL THO
ReplyDeleteJust proves that this magazines opinion means nothing.
ReplyDeleteLupe Should Have been way higher than Rick Ross & Lil Kim! DMX Exactly Deservers a Spot on here (You only say he doesn't because you never heard a whole album by him) AS for Fabalous He proved me wrong with the soul tape... but that's only 1 Dope Project he has and he's been in the game for like 11 years.....
ReplyDeletethey dont know the classic lupe. they based it on lasers lol.
ReplyDeleteThis isn't really a lyricist list.
ReplyDeleteWhy is lil kim even on a lyricist list let alone ahead of Lu?
They have so many people too low (Canibus #44?) and so many people too high (Queen Latifah #25?).
This list is obviously isn't based off of pure lyrics or at least technique.
This list is soooo ignorant.
The source opinions died done years ago so they are not valid
ReplyDeleteOutsourced!
ReplyDeleteI actually died laughing when I read that. I mean Ross?? I mess with Ross but come on!
ReplyDeleteI would say that maybe this will inspire Lupe to drop some heat. But he's doing that already so..
hahaha JOKE!!!
ReplyDelete"Lu don't move/moo no cowards/cow-words, you only heard lines/lions."
Seriously, when The Source can f**k with that ^^^, then they can make a list.
This made me curse...and I hate cursing.
Whack
ReplyDeleteWtf lil wayne is 36?? Umm the source employs some dumbasses
ReplyDeleteGreat Job !o_O
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw this I literally "Man, fuck that shit!" Lol I was in the library.
ReplyDeleteWas this list fixed o something o were the people who reviewed it not hip hop o rap fans n just put random names on that list?
ReplyDeleterick ross??? which means blow mind fast over build mind faster?? seriously
ReplyDeleteThey made the list off this:
ReplyDelete"Judging these MC's (who are required to have released at least two albums in their career) in the categories of sentient, scope, depth, and of course, wordplay."
http://www.thesource.com/articles/226730?thesource-prod=dsucpi8nhnjuekh5o2fehiuov1
hi farah you are beautiful
ReplyDeleteyou guys are forgetting.. real g's moves in silence like lasagna -lil wayne
ReplyDeletewell deserved 36.
This list is predictable and completely moronic, just like the publication it came from.
ReplyDeleteLol reading the paragraph on 50 Cent pretty much gives away that this list is not about lyrics at all.
ReplyDeleteAll I've done is read the title to this post "Lupe ranked 49th on The Source's 'Top 50 Lyricists of All Time' List" and my reaction sounded like the Double Burger With Cheese/Menace II Society dude..."WHHHHHHAAT?'
ReplyDeleteWhat a fucking joke. I'll have to look at the list later.
The Source, hahaha the source of what? Getting shit completely wrong?
Rick ross is more lyrical than lupe?!
ReplyDeleteEven Rick Ross would disagree.
New Question: Where would you all place Fiasco? Top 5? Top 10?
ReplyDelete49? Fuck out of here! They probably put him low on the list because he isn't "politically-hood correct'. I hate politics of any kind!
ReplyDeleteEven Lil Kim was higher on the list than Lupe,smh....The Source can kiss my ass!
ReplyDeletethis is dumb. i have been following lupe for years because his words have intelligence unlike the stupid shit on the radio. none of this like is right. granted i like nas being so high, but why is common not in the top 5? lupe at the least should be top ten with top five consideration. q-tip should be higher. rick ross and wayne should be left out completely. but one thing i can say im glad is that drake was left off thank god
ReplyDeletelol @ Anon "even Rick Ross would disagree"
ReplyDeletethis list is a f_cking joke period!!
I agree with Gabriel. Let's make our own top 50 lyricists of all time list!!!
ReplyDeleteNumber 1
ReplyDeleteEverything on the radio isnt stupid. Kendrick is on the radio! Anyway... If they really based it on sentient, scope, depth & wordplay then this list is all fucked up and wrong...
ReplyDeletePlease someone refer me to a Rick Ross song where he shows any one of those four criteria mentioned?
Uhmmm... Number 1? Nah... I fuck wit Lupe but thats just a bit high...
ReplyDeleteWe are talking of all time, after all...
Starting from #1, I think they're pretty much on point with the list until they get to #9... Then it's just all mixed up and wrong after that...
Rakim is #1
ReplyDeleteRick Ross and Lil Kim are better lyricists than Lu, hahahahah
ReplyDeleteLike riley from the boondocks would say"man aint this a b###h, this some o bullshit"!
ReplyDelete
