Preview Matthew Santos' new album - Quickly Disappearing

Matthew is kicking off 2012 with a new solo album and a US tour. The new album, entitled Quickly Disappearing, will be released on CandyRat Records. On Quickly Disappearing, Santos plumbs social consciousness and takes inspiration from the precarious predicament resulting from the melting polar ice caps and the crisis that is global warming.

He brings this global issue into a sentimental and personal arena drawing parallels in his own life as an artist trying not to lose himself while also recognizing the enormity and urgency of this looming environmental disaster.

“Musically speaking, the album is a collection of introspective songs ranging from intimate, stripped down, acoustic movements, to full band rock 'n roll tunes,” explains Santos.

Album drops on Jan 31st.

Lupe Fiasco interview w/ Hypebeast

Lupe Fiasco’s affection for sneakers has been well documented ever since he first entered the music scene with his Grammy-nominated first single “Kick, Push” in 2005. Being named a Vans OTW advocate, his involvement with footwear has now reached the next level as the Chicago native has taken an active role in designing.

Last Wednesday, during Vans’s launch event for its Spring 2012 OTW footwear line during Berlin Fashion Week, we caught up with Lupe and conversed about his involvement with the brand, his design processs, his intentions with this collaboration, his latest musical project SNDCLSH and much more.

What message are you trying to convey by collaborating with such a huge platform like Vans?

Being such a big brand, they obviously have their own philosophies. My role is based on the advocating aspect. OTW models have already been created and then we, the advocates, come in and put in the final touches. They are also trying to be educational with what they are doing, which is something I agree with.

They create a shoe that is fashionable but still carries the Vans DNA, which means it has a story behind it. It’s a shoe that you can wear every day. It is not something that comes with crazy colors and a bunch of crazy pieces. Don’t get me wrong, that is cool but the OTWs are suitable for a every day experience since they are simple and fashionable. The shoes are also relatively affordable and you can wear them for a long time. There are some technical aspects being added to it to make them more comfortable.

It makes sense and I certainly agree with that. So on that level, that was something that I was looking for. I was not looking for high fashion like Lanvin and Louis Vuitton, tear them up and feel bad and stupid about it afterwards. Or even shoes that are too heavy. So the OTWs are cool, you can wear them every day.

What is the status of your next solo album?

Food & Liquor II is in the works. However, it’s a complicated process – dealing with the record company and all that so I can’t really open up on it right now. But I am definitely looking forward to it and can’t wait to offer something special from Lupe Fiasco. Be on the lookout.

Lupe Fiasco interview w/ Complex

Complex sat down with Lupe Fiasco to talk about Vans, fashion, and his appreciation for Yohji Yamamoto.

You were named Vans OTW advocate recently, but it seems you've been rocking their shoes for years. How natural did the relationship with the company feel?

I was wearing more Vans than any other shoe, and I have thousands of shoes. I was wearing them just everyday — out of simplicity, ease of wear, and pricepoint. I feel bad wearing Lanvins and destroying them, but with Vans I don't really care.

I've worked with shoe brands before. I've worked with Reebok, Adidas, and even Y-3. I've always been in and out of that world of being a brand advocate, but this was a little bit easier because it was like "I'm already doing it." Even if we weren't building a relationship together, I would still be wearing them. You could just come to a show and shoot me performing and I'd be in some Vans.

What's your favorite pair?

My most remembered pair are Vans Syndicates. Some Sk8-His that I was actually skating in. That was my first lesson in like "maybe I shouldn't skate in these." They were more a fashion shoe, and I put two big ollie holes in the side. I was like "Oh well." But those are my most remembered pair.

Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor 2 is featured in MSN's 2012 New Music Guide

MSN has put together a list of major releases that are expected to drop this year and Food & Liquor 2 is featured on it among new projects from Busta Rhymes, Alicia Keys, 50 Cent, Madonna, Linkin Park and others.

This past year, when Lupe Fiasco finally saw the release of his long-withheld album, "Lasers," he described himself as "medium suicidal" over what he heard. Fans disagreed, as the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 200,000 copies in its first week.

In recent interviews, this fickle pioneer of socially conscious rap -- Common and Talib Kweli also figure prominently in this style -- appears to be much more excited about his next record, which is due out sometime in 2012.

Lupe Fiasco talks about his DJ Career

The BoomBox comes through with the 2nd part of their convo with Lupe today. This time he talks about his DJ project "SNDCLSH".

"I got a couple side projects coming up [like] my DJ album 'SNDCLSH,'" he tells The BoomBox. "Me and my partner [DJ] Sky [Gellatly] put together an all electronic, all dance music album. No rapping, no hip-hop, just all dance music."

Fiasco started deejaying a while back and decided to turn his spinning talent into a full-length project. "I got an offer to DJ like a year-and-a-half ago," he reveals. "It was something that I was good at, so it was like I got tired of playing other people's music so it's like, I might as well make my own dance music. It should be good."

'SNDCLSH' will be less about adding to his growing pockets and more about giving back to the community, with all proceeds of the album to be donated. "We actually going to be working for other people on this record," he stated.

The album is slated for release sometime this spring.

Lupe Fiasco on Food & Liquor 2: "It's not done yet, I'm waiting on my Record Company"

Same shit, different album? .... The BoomBox chopped it up with Lupe at the BigBangNYE event, too. And Lupe talked about Food & Liquor 2.

"The 'Lupe [Fiasco's Food & Liquor II]' album is [coming out] hopefully. It's not on me," he reveals. "It's not done yet. I'm waiting on my record company, ain't nothing changed. Same business, it's on them."

While he waits on his label, Fiasco is gearing up to go back out on the road. "We got a big tour coming up in Australia in April, and we got a couple things sprinkled through the top part of the year," he states. "Nothing real crazy, we're going to wait until the album drops to really go hard."
