Lupe Fiasco talks concept of Food & Liquor 2

Ebony interviewed Lupe and he talked about Aung San Suu Kyi, Freedom, his song Around My Way (Freedom Ain't Free) and Food & Liquor 2 The Great American Rap Album, Part 1.

Excerpt below:

EBONY: Let’s talk about your new single, “Freedom Ain’t Free”, what’s your message there? What are you trying to get people to think about?

LF: I question the concept of freedom. Is freedom really “free”? You have to pay for everything; everything comes at some type of cost; are you just going from one form of subjugation to another? As I said, I am just making statements. The song is a collage of different scenes through American history, and American pop culture. The struggles of Native Americans, the black community, the white community, the struggles of the far reaches of the U.S .empires.

EBONY: Lastly, tell me about the concept behind “Great American Rap Album, Part 1.”

LF: I don’t want to give too much away just yet, but is basically about my perspective of America and rapping. Just those two things: you will get songs about rapping and songs about America.

S1 produced 3 Food & Liquor 2 Tracks

Symbolyc One recently talked to HipHopDX and revealed that he produced 3 tracks for Lu. Read below!

DX: You said earlier that you would work with Lupe and J. Cole, those are two really interesting names. I know with Lupe there was a lot of backlash after Lasers, people are really hopeful that his next album will be sort of like a return to his older stuff. Have you heard any of the other Lupe records, and what is your stuff for him sounding like?

S1: I haven’t heard any of the other Lupe records. Well actually I heard one an A&R played for me I think. Then the joints he’s gotten from me and these producers, have you ever heard of Chris & Rich, two brothers? We co-produced these three joints that Lupe got and man these joints, I love ‘em. They’re crazy, all three of them are different from each other, but they have a certain unique sound about them. Also, one of those three joints is like, I wouldn’t have necessarily thought Lupe would have gotten, I guess because it’s so different, a different approach.

So based on the three joints that we have produced for him, it’s interesting. [Laughs] That’s all I can say. I don’t know about what the rest of the songs on the album are going to sound like, but I really do dig the stuff that he got from us.

In a recent interview, Killer Mike describes the extremes in Hip-Hop and how Lupe Fiasco fans can consider themselves "elitist". Cypress Hill a Big Influence to Lupe

In a recent interview, Cypress Hill was asked about the fusion of genres and musical elements in today's industry and their influence on that practice. This is what they had to say:

We never walk around thinking we’re these catalyst dudes or whatever. We’ve always done what we’ve done from the heart because it’s what we want to do and who we want to be on stage and on records. Just touring around the world and coming across other artists and cats telling us that, “Yo, you’ve been a big influence on us.” Like, Outkast just told us that. Lupe Fiasco’s told us that. A bunch of other cats. I’m like, “Wow, we’ve made more of an impact than I ever thought we would.” It’s one of those things where we’re not trying to take credit for anything that’s out there that made it big. But we’re aware that we’ve influenced people. It’s just one of those things where we believed in ourselves and that inspires other artists.

Video: Pete Rock open to Work w/ Lupe Fiasco

"If the artist doesn't like something I did or said, then we could work through it with a conversation. That's always my goal — it's never to add fuel to the fire," Pete Rock told MTV News of the falling out with Lupe.

"I would love to get in the studio and work with him if his management team can respect me as a man, and the label can respect me as a man, and Lupe himself can respect me as a man. I would love to work with him, and I wouldn't turn my nose to it."
