Pete Rock issues another Statement regarding T.R.O.Y. Remake

After Lupe's Shade 45 interview yesterday, Pete Rock issued a 2nd statement about the remake of T.R.O.Y. ..Read it below:

It’s true that Lupe Fiasco’s representative from Atlantic Records contacted me last fall and he did so while I was in mourning over the sudden death of my cousin Heavy D. I gave the representative a conditional “yes” to use T.R.O.Y. for Lupe’s album but only based on the condition that I be involved on the project. It’s what I always say when approached by people who want to use that particular song. I was never contacted again. At no point was there any follow up from Atlantic Records. Now, the story gets twisted and it’s being said that I said “yes.” The part about my conditions has been left out to make me seem like I’m a hypocrite. When I heard about the song again, it was done, completed, and playing on the radio…and that was Monday night.

It’s true that people have made T.R.O.Y. over. I can’t control what’s done with my work after it’s already out there but I can control who gets my blessings. Those who involve me and respect me in the process, get my blessings. Those who work behind my back – but all the while putting up a front like I’m down with it – don’t.

I’m flattered that they wanted to remake my song and that they respect it for the classic that it is. I just think they should have talked to Atlantic Records to make sure things were done right. The biggest violation is from Atlantic Records but what can you expect? Labels are corporations and their whole point is to sell records. If they respect the artist in the process that would be nice, but they’re not required. For as political as Lupe as, I expected him to know that and to have hopefully made them more accountable. I’m surprised that he’s siding with the corporation on this.

Technically, there was no crime committed with the release of Lupe’s version of my song. Technically, the song can be out there but I’m not talking about legalities. I’m asking: Where’s the respect for the code among artists? No ego, but I know my place in this game. I’m recognized as a legend and I accept that. But most of all, I’m a grown man. The love and admiration that people have for me as a producer and as a man of honor has been non-stop, consistent for over 20 years. That’s based on something that can’t be touched. My music and my character stands for itself. T.R.O.Y was a career-defining song has gotten me invited to the White House. It’s not just because people think the production is dope. It’s also because of what the song stands for. I want my music to touch people but I don’t want to be walked over or lied on in the process.

I admit that my outburst on Monday night on Twitter was based on my reminiscing about Heav and Troy. I think about them every day. I apologize for being emotional about this. I had no intentions of hurting Lupe’s career. That’s not me. I’m known for building up not breaking down careers. Moving forward, I’m 100% in control and focused on what’s good.

  1. Lu and Pete need to just sit down, have some coffee and talk face to face. Forget all this he said she said (one of my favorite Lu songs fyi) or the labels said. Meet up. Talk. Work it out. Shoot the video together. Keep it positive.

  2. WOW IF THAT'S TRUE AND I'M SURE IT IS LUPE IS IN WRONG HE DIDN'T EVEN CONTACT HIM HIMSELF ? WHAT A WEAK MOVE AND THEN THEY NEVER GOT PETE TO BE INVOLVED YET HE PHONES UP THE RADIO STATION LIKE A LIL BITCH THIS IS REAL SAD.

LU OBVIOUSLY HAS AN OVERBLOWN EGO WITH LITTLE RESPECT AND TO THEN CALL OUT A LEGEND LIKE HE DID TO THE WORLD ON AIR HAS REALLY DAMAGED HIS REP.

OBVIOUSLY IT WAS IN HEAT OF MOMENT BUT STILL THEY SHOULD OF SPOKEN MAN TO MAN.

I KNOW PETE TWEETED FIRST BUT THAT WAS PROBABLY HIS BEST OPTION TO TELL HIS SIDE SEEING AS LU SHUNNED HIM FOR THE TRACK AND IF THE ABOVE IS THE TRUTH HE HAD EVERY RIGHT TO BE PISSED.

HOPEFULLY HE CAN APOLOGISE PUT THIS BEHIND HIM AND JUST LET HIS MUSIC DO THE TALKIN IN FUTURE THIS WAS A TERRIBLE MISTAKE ON HIS PART.

I STILL LOVE LU BUT THIS WAS REAL DUMB

  3. OBVIOUSLY IT MIGHT BE LIES AND IF SO I'M SURE LU WILL RESPOND IT'S JUST A SHAME THIS PETTY BEEF HAS COME OUT OF IT.

  4. I've never heard that beat untill lu rapped over it so pete should be thankful that lu puting it out to the new generation

  5. All of this could have been avoided had Pete said no from the start or had not gone on a rant on twitter.

He made it seem like Lu didn't even try to get his blessing, furthermore he went in on how the track is untouchable all the while calling Lupe's version wack...

Pete handled it very immaturely. He threw Lupe under the bus whether it was intentional or not. If the issue was with the label he should have made that CLEAR. Now you have everyone calling Lupe disrespectful and shit.

Pete should have contacted Lu himself and told him his issue instead of making it public. It seems like there are things that even Lupe didn't know since he left it up to his camp to get the blessing.

It is what it is. Unfortunate this happening to Lupe when things were going so well..

  14. Man fuck Pete, like Lupe said Pete apologized on the phone for being foul about this but didn't wanna backtrack publicly because it would make him look crazy.

Now all of a sudden you go from acting like you was never contacted to "I said yes but not really"? Lol gtfo. You fucked up Pete, own up to it. Oh and you already fucked with Lu's career so that damage is done. Smh.

  15. Relax guys, this is only going to hype up F&L 2 ;)

  16. Pete claims he is a "grown man" but was all on TWITTER like a 16 year old BOY ranting about what happened!!

Psssh, he lose a lot of "legend respect" for that. What other grown men rap legends do you see on Twitter having fights like a TEENAGER!??

  17. I love Pete rock in the 90s but Lu is from my generation n he's putting real music just like Pete rock & Cl smooth did once I'm srry Pete but I'm going with Lu tho mistakes were made on both sides

  18. If any of you watch the Colbert Report, he often jokes that those who appear on his show get "the Colbert Bump"...essentially a boost in the person's popularity, exposure, and political support...

It would be cool if someone charted the YouTube hits for "Pete Rock & C. L. Smooth 'They Reminisce Over You'" beginning from a few months back (note: Is that even possible? I would assume some servers store this data and/or YouTube somehow tracks it. I don't have time to look into this, so I really dunno. But I assume it is possible for arguments sake).

I predict a "Lupe Bump" will clearly be evident. There will be a surge in the views for the Pete Rock original. This is the effect. Moreover, without taking sides, no one can really deny that each of the versions is in fact ART. Thus, no matter your position here, the result will be an increase in the dissemination of ART. I'm sure Pete Rock values his work. It is after all his ART. I'm sure that most artists, including Pete Rock will attest to the notion that if they are proud of their art, they would want to have their ART appreciated by many more like those who appreciated it before them. This is what is going to happen here. He is going to get a benefit, and he will be happier with it than without.

Setting blame aside, those are the realities of what is going on here as a result of the alleged theft. Most people will agree to this, or well..."get got" when the Lupe Bump is revealed.

Moving on. You have Pete unnecessarily souring the situation. He soured without a strong case. Most questions of fact seem to be in Lupe's favor. Pete Rock gave a blessing of some sort; each side articulated a blessing. Despite this, no blessing was even required. If the gripe of unoriginal stems from #FAF sounding too similar to your original, it's because they wanted it. The master recording or TROY isn't clear-able b/c of copyright clearances. So a re-do. Lupe et. al weren't trying to pass off a new beat so the world think it's Simonsayz & B-Sidet who made it. How was that what Pete Rock was thinking when he ranted on twitter? I dunno.

In sum, tt doesn't matter what appeal to emotion arguments Pete fans make, at the end of the day Pete's ART (so close and dear to his heart) will be heard in its original form as he intended to a more beneficial degree. In addition to that we have Lupe's version, which some argue is once again some Hip-Hop that has some Hip-Hop teeth.

  19. Biggest thing! Pete never had the rights to T.R.O.Y. in the first place, which is what he's failing to acknowledge. Therefore Atlantic didn't have to call him back - and if he loves Lupe like he said in a previous statement then he could have contacted Lu. This rap bs: Public disses and private apologies.

    2) I find that those who think Freedom Aint Free don't have the background knowledge to understand the lyrics. Just like in the 80s and 90s when you could listen to a song over and over and still find a new meaning, the remake is that on steroids. It's okay if you don't get it.

  20. Grown men don't air stuff out on twitter. That's for the typical teen that wants attention and the spotlight i.e like saying "i'm so pissed off" just so someone will ask why. You can be a legend at your craft but that speaks nothing to your character.

  23. God damn , will you lupe stans shut the fuck up? again if you haven't hear T.R.O.Y. thats your fault! not pete's. i'm only 16 years old and i heard that song several years ago. Being part of the "next generation" is not an excuse in light of the fucking internet. Thats a bullshit argument , when information is only a mouse click away. Damn...You guys are riding Lupe's dick like children ride Mongolian sex offenders.

    ReplyDelete
  24. ^and you need to stop dick riding pete's dick?

Not everyone goes on the internet searching for songs made in the 80's/90's. Since you are 16 I'm willing to bet that there classic songs that YOU have YET to listen to despite being in the light of the fucking internet. Stop sucking pete rock's dick, and spit the cum out from your mouth and admit Lupe Fiasco killed the beat.

    ^

Accuse me of dickriding...then go onto suck Lupe's dick..right. For the record I like Lupe's version. Second of all How am i riding Pete's dick? By saying he is a legend , and one of the best hip-hop producers ever? If thats dick sucking i will happily continue. Then i will spit his cum onto your face.

One more note , yes there are plenty of classic records i am ye to hear. But just because i haven't heard them yet doesn't mean the people who made them Bored old fucks who keep trying to get into the spotlight.

    Fuckin stans...

LOL How the FUCK do u sound?

You are saying that you aren't "dick riding" Pete because all you are saying is that Pete is legend? Funny... All I said was that Lupe killed the beat... yet you say I "go onto suck Lupe's dick?"

Just GTFO son. People like you only come on the internet to start shit.

    ReplyDelete
  27. ? So you Pete rock is a legend and thats dickriding...But you say lupe killed the beat , and that is somehow different? I don't see anything wrong with calling you a dick rider. If saying Pete rock is a Legend = dickriding , then saying lupe killed the beat=dickriding.

And just what is wrong with starting shit on the internet? At least this way you avoid having me spit Pete Rock's cum in your eyes.

  28. ^

Are you stupid lol? You are the first one to start calling people a dick rider fool. I only said you were dick rider because you said that we were dick riding Lu.

Don't try to paint me as hypocrite lol. You are the one started calling people dick riders, but when I called you one you act surprised saying "why are u accusing me of dick riding when all I did was call Pete a legend" lol.

Just get the fuck out man.

    ReplyDelete
  29. ^ I didn't call YOU a dickrider. i was talking about this other dudes bowing down before Lupe Christ.

    1. Lupe christ responds to pete rock
    2. Before pete rock responds he is proclaimed a dickish ol fuck , by Lupe Stans
    3. this = Dickriding

"I only said you were dick rider because you said that we were dick riding Lu."

I'm a dickrider?? no YOUR a dickrider!! - pretty much what your saying. Thats some childish reasoning.

If you want me to "get the fuck out" you can simply not respond to this post.

    ReplyDelete
  30. LOL

Then why didn't you make it evident that people were bashing Pete before he even got the chance to respond initially instead of saying "you lupe stans need to shut the fuck up" lol?

It's not like everyone knew he was going to respond anyway. Nobody expected Lu to respond by going on a rant on an interview, yet you had people calling Lupe a thief and unoriginal before he even got the chance to respond.

And Pete is a "dickish ol fuck" for going on rant on twitter like a fucking 16 year old... nothing "dickriding" about that statement... Pete as producer is a legend, but as person...

Like I said get the fuck out.

    ReplyDelete
  31. "And Pete is a "dickish ol fuck" for going on rant on twitter like a fucking 16 year old... nothing "dickriding" about that statement... Pete as producer is a legend, but as person..."

I said nothing about Pete as a person , i was only talking about him as a producer. Second you never mentioned Pete rock's little twitter rant. matter of fact neither of has even mentioned the situation up until the last two comments.

"Then why didn't you make it evident that people were bashing Pete before he even got the chance to respond initially instead of saying "you lupe stans need to shut the fuck up" lol?"

Hmm , thought it was pretty clear in the comments of previous posts.

"like i said get the fuck out" - if you really want me to "get the fuck out" , then simply don't respond to this comment. Its really quite simple.

  32. Since i haven't said anything about the lupe/pete rock issue here is my piece:

I'm not suprised by Pete rock's outburst at all ,this guy holds grudges like a camel. He is has been known to spit in label executives faces & has been beefing with C.L. Smooth forever. His twitter rant was unnecessary & childish. Lupe's shade45 interview was kind of funny. " Lord Lupe christ is yelling into the phone , sounding angry , therefore what he says is 100% FACTUAL" - Stans

If i was sway , i would've been like "yo i know your mad , but i don't need niggas yelling at me in the morning".

But then again i don't really give a shit , and probably wouldn't even be listening.

So? I'm not understanding your point here.

***"Hmm , thought it was pretty clear in the comments of previous posts."***

I meant how come you didn't make it clear that YOU took issue with the fact that people were jumping to conclusions without Pete responding in your first comment instead of saying "God damn , will you lupe stans shut the fuck up?"

***"Lupe christ is yelling into the phone , sounding angry , therefore what he says is 100% FACTUAL" - Stans"***

Yeah, pretty much everything Lupe said was fact. Pete didn't deny anything Lupe had said. The only thing Lupe had said that wasn't necessarily true was that Pete gave his blessing. He left it up to his camp to get Pete's permission. Pete claims to give a conditional yes, but Lupe didn't know that because he left it up to other people to get the blessing and they apparently didn't tell him the entire story.

Other than that... everything is pretty much LOL & SMH @ Pete Rock.

Not denying that What Lupe said was most likely true , just took issue with some initial responses

Eh,fair enough. Probably should've stated that , and THEN told lupe stans to shut the fuck up lol.

"Other than that... everything is pretty much LOL & SMH @ Pete Rock."

Yeah, well this is how he has handled things for well over a decade now , it comes as no suprised to me. I usually don't really care much about artists apart from their music. i figure the music tells me all i need to know.
